Stars of Matariki (The Nine Stars of Matariki)

It is me Albin here. You must be reading this to learn more about the Nine Stars of Matariki or else. Do you know about it...then comment down below what you think it is.



The Nine Stars

1. Matariki (Alcyone)


First up, we have Matariki. This star that signifies reflection of time past. It represent a connection to the environment and herald a time for people to gather together. 


2. Pōhutukawa (Sterope/Asterope)


Next we have Pōhutukawa. This is the star that cradles the memories of those loved ones that we have lost. It is a symbol of connection to the past and to the ancestors who have gone before us.

3. Waitī (Maia)

This is the star that shines for all sources of freshwater and the life within.

4. Waitā (Taygeta)

This star symbolises all sources of salt water as well as those that dwell within it. It discover new life within these waters even after all this time.

5. Waipuna-ā-rangi (Electra)

This star is associated with life-giving rain in all forms – ua nganga (hail), hukarere (snow), haupapa (sleet), pūroro (driving rain) and hāuaua and everything in-between.

6. Tupuānuku (Pleione)

This is Waitī the star with an interest of all that grows in the ground that can be harvested, gathered and used as sustenance.

7. Tupuārangi (Atlas)

This star is linked with the trees, forests, fruits, berries and birds. 

8. Ururangi (Merope)

This star is mainly associated with the moods of the day. It controls when it is sunny, cloudy windy etc...

9. Hiwaiterangi/Hiwa (Celaeno)

This is the star to be wished upon. It is the youngest star of the nine and represent the hopes and aspirations to be carried forth to the coming year.
